Visit from the feathered kind

The last time I received a visit from this special woodpecker, A Northern Flicker, was November 2023, where he came upon my window at my office.

It has this unique black crescent on the chest and red splash of coloring with black spots. Males have this black “mustache” stripe on the face. Being able to appreciate nature in Connecticut or anywhere, is a mindful practice. One way to appreciate our feathered friends is to provide some seed if you can afford the seed or the time it takes to feed them including getting a bird feeder. Your bird feeder should also avoid attracting bears. This particular bird feeder is on a porch on the second floor where I don’t attract any squirrels or chipmunks. Common to this feeder are red cardinals, Eastern blue birds, Junkos, mockingbirds, nuthatches, titmouse, and yellow goldfinches.

I enjoy photographing and observing these Northeastern birds with my iPhone. The birds behavior is very soothing to the spirit. It is a peaceful and uplifting practice that allows for appreciation and wonder of the beauty of these many species of birds. They say that when you see a cardinal, it is a visit from a spirit of someone who has passed. There are many meaningful representations when sighting a bird that may be superstitious or may be a sign of something. You can believe what you would like.

Seeing a Northern Flicker Woodpecker may symbolize harmony and new beginnings. With 2026 approaching, I think a new beginning is on the horizon for all. It also symbolizes a healer’s path as believed by Native Americans. I am a healer for many who rely on therapy and counseling. As 2026, begins, it is the simple and little things around us, that were always there that may call our attention. Visiting the local bird seed store in Glastonbury, I am able to purchase the seed and mealworms for the Eastern Bluebirds. I hope to share more pictures in this blog. I always look forward to going to the Wild birds store. I pick up gifts as well such as mugs and other bird memorabilia and bird figurines. Feathered friends also symbolize freedom, flight and takeoff in many ways. As they come to the feeder, it appears to be a dance between birds. So as I do, I invite you to take notice of the birds in the trees and on the rooftops as they swoop in and out the sky! And here’s to new beginnings and Happy New Year!

And I would love to share this poem by Emily Dickinson

“Hope” is the thing with feathers

BY EMILY DICKINSON

“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all –
And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard –
And sore must be the storm –
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm –
I’ve heard it in the chillest land –
And on the strangest Sea –
Yet – never – in Extremity,
It asked a crumb – of me.
